Tangchao Wharf: Blending Tradition and Modernity in Teochew Cuisine

A Restaurant Inspired by Teochew Culture

Tangchao Wharf, designed by Ray Cai, is a restaurant that pays homage to the rich heritage of Teochew culture. With its unique blend of traditional elements and modern design, this restaurant offers a truly immersive dining experience.

The inspiration for Tangchao Wharf comes from the vibrant Teochew culture, known for its distinctive traditions and customs. The restaurant's design captures the essence of Teochew culture, with its connotative shop front featuring a gable that symbolizes the five elements - metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. This gable serves as a visual reminder of Teochew people's hometown, evoking a sense of nostalgia and connection.

One of the standout features of Tangchao Wharf is the bull sculpture, representing the famous local scenic spot Xiang-zi Bridge. This sculpture, along with the stands constructed by wooden benches, creates an atmosphere that transports diners back to their hometown. The fusion of traditional elements with modern design creates a unique and captivating ambiance.

What sets Tangchao Wharf apart is its dedication to showcasing the centuries-old tradition of Teochew culture in a contemporary setting. By injecting modern elements into Chinese-style design, the restaurant creates a harmonious blend of the old and the new. This fusion of tradition and modernity is a testament to the cultural significance of Teochew heritage.

The realization of Tangchao Wharf's design was achieved through careful attention to detail and the use of innovative techniques. The space is divided into an antechamber, courtyard, and back hall, following the concept of Xiashanhu and Sidianjin, which are integral to Teochew civil residences. This division creates an alternative feeling of partly hidden and partly visible spaces, avoiding the constraints of traditional architectural forms.

With a project area of 450 square meters, Tangchao Wharf incorporates various design elements to enhance the dining experience. The chandeliers and vintage steel pipe tungsten lamps create mottled shadows, adding to the overall ambiance. The modern Chinese-style chairs have been re-optimized to align with the design concept, ensuring both comfort and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, a huge Chinese calligraphy piece adorns the roof of the hallway, creating a literary atmosphere.

Tangchao Wharf is a testament to the skill and creativity of the design team, led by chief designer Ray Cai. The project, which started in and was completed in November 2016, is located in Shenzhen, China. The team's research and dedication to preserving Teochew culture shine through in every aspect of the design.

Recognized for its excellence, Tangchao Wharf was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. Tangchao Wharf's design not only fulfills these criteria but also contributes to a better world by celebrating and preserving the cultural heritage of Teochew cuisine.

Experience the fusion of tradition and modernity at Tangchao Wharf, where Teochew culture comes to life through innovative design and delectable cuisine.
